Monrovia Station Square Transit Village

Green Solution and Economic Catalyst

Opened in 2016, the Transit Village is now a welcoming gateway to the city and a thriving example of multimodal transportation as an economic and social catalyst.

A stop on the Metro Gold Line rail system in the San Gabriel Valley, the $30 million village plaza and surrounding streets fueled a variety of residential, commercial, office, hospitality and open space uses that infuse the city center with economic vitality.

AHBE | MIG worked with the lead architect, City and Metro staff, and community stakeholders to transform the site’s hard infrastructure into usable community space. The sustainable, green infrastructure includes native planting, permeable paving, bioswales, infiltration planters, LED lighting and suspended pavement systems—reducing maintenance and environmental impacts on the City and the community at large.

Over 1.3 miles of adjacent new green streets make pedestrian connections to the station more inviting and attractive. And, 3 acres of open space offer an event lawn, bio-trail, community park and children’s play areas. Partially funded with an Urban Greening Grant from the California Natural Resources Agency, the project serves as an education tool through signage and other graphic elements alongside visible stormwater treatment technologies, increasing public awareness of sustainable and green solutions.

AHBE | MIG provided landscape design and construction administration for all the planting, hardscape, irrigation, community spaces and adjacent streetscapes for the 80-acre project.

The project received the 2018 Merit Award – Quality of Life Design from the American Society of Landscape Architects/Southern California Chapter.
