Iipay Nation Tribal Community Plan
The new Tribal Community Plan for the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel will guide future growth of their Reservation for the next 20-30 years. The Reservation covers about 15,500 acres of land in San Diego County and includes steep topography, ranging from 3,200 feet to 5,700 feet above sea level.
The Plan and is based on careful analysis of existing physical, social and economic conditions and identification of future trends and opportunities. The community engaged in developing the Plan through a series of community workshops, the Annual Tribal Gathering and meetings with local Tribe members and residents. The voices of the population represented in the Plan allowed the community’s values and preferences to be incorporated up front and sets reasonable expectations for how the Reservation develops and plans for everyday quality of life and for the future.
The Plan includes recommendations regarding land use, zoning, and other planning conventions to guide the future development of the Nation’s land, as well as plans and recommendations for housing, conservation, infrastructure, design guidelines and implementation plan. The Plan covers five main areas:
- Define areas for economic growth centers
- Verify sites for housing that are practical and efficient
- Identify important community amenities that should be included in the village center
- Designate important locations that hold significant cultural or historic value to be marked for preservation
- Create opportunities for new walking trails and access to nature to encourage healthy physical activity
The Reservation is a unique community in an beautiful rural landscape of dramatic hillsides with breathtaking views. With the Community Plan, the Tribe can continue to build a sustainable, cohesive and enduring environment.
