Berkeley Arts and Culture Plan Update

Art for Life

Applying an equity lens to the Arts and Culture Plan 2018-2027 led to targeted strategies for City staff and Civic Arts Commissioners to continually analyze its practices and operations to ensure they reflect the cultural and racial diversity of Berkeley, the array of artistic disciplines practiced, geographic reach, and the current needs of the arts sector in Berkeley.

Inclusive public engagement helped the City understand what role residents want public art and cultural activities to play in shaping the future of Berkeley. Over 850 arts advocates, community organization and community members shared arts-related goals, opportunities and priorities in community meetings, interviews, an online survey, and via an interactive website. Community input revealed that increasing accessing to affordable housing and expanding high-quality, equitable arts education are keys goals for enhancing the arts sector.

A Current Conditions Report anlayzes key drivers currently influencing the arts ecosystem, including shifting demographics, funding resources and recent policies. And an Economic Impact Report documents the significance of the arts and culture industry for Berkeley’s local economy. The fully updated Arts and Culture Plan includes recommended policy improvements and actions to enhance the sustainability and vitality of arts and culture in Berkeley for the long-term.
