Olympic College Landscaping
As part of a major redesign of the Olympic College campus, the College wanted to enhance its connections to its residential neighbors and the City of Bremerton.
A new formal vehicular entry and drop off area connects with the campus pedestrian spine. A new civic plaza adjacent to the new College Instruction Center and its performance hall is open to the community for concerts and other events. Several smaller gathering spaces interspersed throughout this new part of campus provide space for study and smaller gatherings.
Runoff from the College Instruction Center roof is channeled through runnels to rain gardens, and stormwater from the new campus entryway is collected and treated in a series of bio filtration swales. Permeable paving has been used whenever possible, including for the fire lane that runs through the center of campus. New parking areas provide welcoming entry landscaping and include natural drainage systems that treat up to 90% of all parking stormwater runoff. MIG | Nakano Associates worked closely with facilities and maintenance staff to design a landscape that is attractive, sustainable and meets the needs of the students, staff and the Bremerton community.
