South Park Streetscape

LA’s South Park district is a vibrant hot spot where sports, entertainment and dining intersect. It includes the STAPLES Center where the LA Lakers and Clippers play, L.A. Live entertainment complex, and the Los Angeles Convention Center. Dog park and “escape room?” Yep, those too.

So MIG| AHBE’s streetscape for the new mixed-use housing development had to be suitably spectacular. With water and energy conservation guiding every design decision, and a seamless integration of landscape with road infrastructure and the public right-of-way, this streetscape design set the precedent for LA’s Green Streets program and is now a model for sustainable streetscape design for other Southern California cities.

A system of bioswale “planters” manage and filter stormwater, with capacity for handling a ten-year storm. It minimizes run-off into the City’s system, cleanses the water naturally and recharges the region’s aquifers. Lush drought-tolerant plantings and shade trees support the project’s sustainability and resilience goals while enhancing the pedestrian experience. The master plan also widened the sidewalks and extended corner curbs to increase pedestrian visibility, decrease crossing distances and slow oncoming traffic.
