Longfellow Creek Dragonfly Pavilion

Dragonflies zipping and darting around a stream indicate it’s a healthy riparian environment. And in Seattle’s restored Longfellow Creek, it means there are salmon. Working with the neighborhood, artist Lorna Jordan created the Dragonfly Pavilion near the creek. A dragonfly, built of steel yet appearing light-weight, hovers 20 feet above an elegant terrazzo plaza and organically shaped seating area. The pavilion marks the high point of the lovely surrounding dragonfly garden and park overlooking the restored salmon-bearing stream. The pavilion is a critical interpretive component of the Longfellow Creek Drainage and Habitat Improvement project, which spans several neighborhoods and includes educational programs and demonstrations of habitat-friendly garden practices. The pavilion highlights the City’s dedication to preserving its natural resources and creating safe and authentic open spaces; a true neighborhood jewel.
