Gaiety Hollow Cultural Landscape Report

Architecture Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver formed the first woman-owned landscape architecture firm in the western United States. They designed their own home and office landscape to reveal their design principles and serve as testing ground and inspiration for their practice. Gaiety Hollow reflects both their design aesthetic and the beaux arts style of design prevalent during the early 20th century.

We developed a site history, documented existing conditions, and analyzed the integrity of the historic landscape to help future generations understand the distinctive qualities of Lord and Schryver’s contributions to the profession of landscape architecture.

The project was awarded first place in the Documenting the Cultural Landscapes of Women, Historic American Landscape Survey Challenge.
