Water Street Multimodal Improvements

One would expect Water Street to lead to…water. And now it will. The new vision transforms this major gateway street from a vehicle-centered 6-lane throughway into a safer, more walkable and bikeable corridor that connects the Downtown and Riverfront areas. It invites people to access the Mobile River. The enhanced pedestrian environment and protective bike lanes reduce the vehicular lanes by two. But new striping and timed traffic signals improve travel for all modes of transportation. New and enhanced crosswalks, landscape buffering and ADA improvements make the area accessible for all visitors. The design includes gateway elements at key nodes and a multipurpose central medial plaza that celebrate Mobile’s rich, layered past and stimulate an economically vibrant and active street environment.
