Port Townsend Historic District Streetscapes
In the historic waterfront district of a small city in the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula, you’ll now find a state-of-the-art streetscape. The area is a U.S. National Historic Landmark District, so great care had to be taken in any renovation. The new street design shifts the roadway from a car-focused environment to a pedestrian-focused streetscape, while still accommodating access to the nearby boat dock. The project included stormwater infrastructure, utility relocation, and roadway regrading and resurfacing. It’s now also ADA accessible, with a woonerf-type pedestrian/vehicular shared area and a pedestrian plaza. And all improvements now integrate seamlessly with the existing businesses, historic buildings and other park infrastructure.
