Washington Stormwater Center Design

What Really Happens to Rain?

How green is green? Let’s test and analyze stormwater management techniques and technologies in a real place in real time; designed in a pioneering collaboration with leading soil, plant and hydrology researchers. Washington State University now has a parking lot with test cells below porous pavement and pervious concrete; a grid of rain gardens with a range of plant palettes and maintenance regimes; and a gallery of soil mesocosms—all to evaluate the flow control and water quality results of these different approaches.

The results will improve stormwater policies and green infrastructure around the world.
