Project Manager – Urban Planning and Policy

We are excited to be growing our urban planning team and are seeking an experienced Urban Planning and Policy Project Manager to join our team of planners, urban designers, landscape architects, and civil engineers in either our Portland, OR, or Seattle, WA, offices.

MIG supports a hybrid work-from-home/remote and in-office schedule and encourages in-person work for learning and team-building opportunities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Teammate: You will work as part of a cross-office, cross-discipline team that creates equitable and resilient plans for communities of all size across the U.S. for both public and private sector clients. Our multidisciplinary Portland and Seattle offices are a team of planners, landscape architects, engineers, and communications specialists.
  • Project Management: As a project manager, you will provide overarching project direction to MIG staff and oversight of work products; lead internal and external subconsultants; and maintain client relationships. You will be responsible for managing scopes, budgets and schedules; sometimes representing clients at public hearings and meetings; and helping to facilitate public meetings. In addition, project managers at MIG contribute to business development and sales through networking, proposal development, and project interviews; they also set the standards for excellence, responsiveness, and accountability.
  • Project Work: You will be leading teams as well as working hands-on creating bold, innovative, and equitable planning solutions. You will provide direction to and work closely with MIG principals, clients, subconsultants/partners, and a multidisciplinary internal and external team to produce project deliverables; write policy; develop forward-thinking strategies, reports, and analyses; provide meeting support and facilitation; and conduct research. Other work will include interacting with diverse members of communities during public engagement activities. In addition, Project Managers at MIG produce high-quality planning documents and other deliverables; maintain client relationships; identify the correct course of action to the client; represent clients at public hearings and meetings; and set the standards for excellence, responsiveness, and accountability.
  • Project Types: MIG is proud to offer a variety of work and project types. Typical projects you’ll work on include comprehensive plans, housing strategies, parks and recreation system plans, development codes, neighborhood plans, small area plans, downtown master plans, campus master plans, and corresponding community engagement, including the use of various online tools.

Business and Client Development: You will help build and maintain strong and responsive client relationships by developing leads, preparing proposals, attending interviews, and helping to define market gaps and new opportunities.
MIG works on projects nationwide; some travel, evening, and weekend work will be required for community engagement, site evaluations, or to meet deadlines. MIG encourages a sustainable and healthy work-life balance, and these excess hours can be offset during the week when possible.

 

 

Qualifications

To accomplish the responsibilities outlined above, you will be able to manage competing priorities, think critically and creatively, work as part of a collaborative team in an open work environment, and maintain a sense of humor and camaraderie. In addition, you have some combination of the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning, policy, public administration, political science, or related field. (A Master’s degree or work in a complementary field is a plus.)
  • Relevant consulting experience working in planning or a closely related field and experience producing plan documents is required.
  • Demonstrated experience managing private-sector, consultant-led projects, including maintaining compliance with project contracts, drafting and managing scopes budgets, and maintaining schedules, as well as working with clients and partners to execute project work.
  • You are local or willing to relocate to the Portland, OR or Seattle WA area to participate in work directly with our teams and clients.
  • The ability to prepare and deliver effective public presentations, lead working meetings, and speak easily and clearly in front of groups and facilitate client and stakeholder meetings.
  • You have knowledge and demonstrated interest in the intersection of design, planning and equity and an ability to develop collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners. MIG values and respects both lived experience as part of a non-dominant group (e.g., gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, ability, etc.) and experience gained through study and work.
  • Excellent skills and written and verbal communication. Experience developing graphics and documents is desirable.
  • Software proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite is required.
  • Sufficient working knowledge of ArcGIS and spatial analyses to direct staff in analyses and mapping efforts is a plus.
  • Ability to actively participate in or lead marketing and business development opportunities, develop proposals for prospective projects, participate in interviews, and develop and maintain potential client and partner relationships.
  • An ability to develop collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with community members, organizations, and partners.
  • As a plus, you are bilingual with Spanish or other non-English language skills.

Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience. This is a full-time, hourly position with eligibility for overtime pay. The pay range for this position is $38-45/hour ($80,000-$100,000/year salary equivalent), commensurate with location, skills, and experience.
