Director of Policy Analysis

We are excited to be growing our management and policy planning team and are seeking a Director of Policy Analysis to join our team of professionals in our Berkeley, California office.

MIG supports a hybrid work-from-home/remote and in-office schedule, however, leaders are expected to work from the office three days per week for learning and team-building opportunities

Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Teammate: You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that focuses on policy and strategic planning, public outreach and engagement, facilitation and consensus-building, and organizational development and training. We work both independently as a local group and team with other MIG offices and disciplines on public and private-sector clients throughout California and the United States.
  • Project Types: The range of content areas you will touch can include transportation; land use planning; park and recreation; housing; environmental justice; sustainability; diversity, equity and inclusion; child and family services; homelessness; health equity; and many more.
  • Project Work: This position will allow you to interact often with diverse members of communities to ensure their perspectives and aspirations influence policy and systems. You will provide critical quantitative and qualitative analysis across a variety of project types, aligned with project objectives and specific project scopes and budgets). This includes:
    • identifying project research questions;
    • recommending research and data collection methodologies, often in collaboration with community engagement specialists;
      designing surveys and focus groups;
    • collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data to guide policy planning;
    • reviewing and validating data in collaboration with project teams;
    • conducting best practice research across a variety of content areas;
    • developing community profiles by gathering and analyzing both primary and secondary data sources; and
    • writing plans, reports, and presentations that translate findings in accessible and culturally responsive ways.
  • Managing Projects: You will provide overarching project direction to MIG staff and oversight of work products; lead internal and external subconsultant and client teams; develop and manage projects including scopes of work, budgets, and schedules; conduct and coordinate research and technical studies, ensure timely and accurate document production, direct graphical analysis, and maintain project records. In addition, Directors at MIG maintain client relationships; identify the correct course of action to the client; represent clients at public hearings and meetings; and set the standards for excellence, responsiveness, and accountability.
  • Client Development: You will help build and maintain strong and responsive client relationships by developing leads, preparing proposals, and helping to define market gaps and new opportunities.
  • Leadership Role: Directors at MIG serve as a leader for the firm and group, working together with staff to ensure effective project management; mentor, supervise and train staff; conduct business development; and keep an eye on MIG’s vision, purpose, and reputation in the professional and regulatory community.

MIG works on projects nationwide; some travel, evening, and weekend work will be required for community engagement, site evaluations, client meetings, or to meet deadlines. MIG encourages a sustainable and healthy work-life balance, and these excess hours can be offset during the week when possible.

Qualifications

To accomplish these responsibilities, you will be able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, think critically and creatively, work as part of a collaborative team in an open environment, and maintain a sense of humor and camaraderie. In addition, the experience, qualities, and skills we are seeking are below.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, or closely related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas:
    • Qualitative research, content analysis and synthesis
    • Quantitative research and statistical analysis
    • Policy formulation and evaluation
    • Legislative process and regulatory compliance
    • Data visualization and presentation
    • Advanced proficiency with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS)
    • Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
    • Program evaluation and performance measurement
    • Stakeholder and community engagement
    • Project management, including maintaining compliance with project contracts; drafting and managing scopes, budgets, and schedules; and working with clients and partners to execute the project work.
  • Possessing the following qualities and skills:

    • You can actively participate in marketing and business development opportunities, develop proposals for prospective projects, participate in interviews, and develop and maintain potential client and partner relationships.
    • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • A plus, you are bilingual with Spanish or other non-English language skills and if you have worked in a policy making setting.

The pay range for this full-time salary position is $115,000-$150,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience.
