Bagley Park Design & Inclusive Play Master Plan
How do you breathe new life into a community? With a new, inclusive play Park Master Plan.
The 16-acre Bagley Community Park—adjacent to an elementary school and a Boys & Girls Club—contains wetland and woodland areas and serves as the backyard for the surrounding multifamily housing units. But the space was in major need of an update.
To incorporate this diverse community’s priorities for the park, outreach was done with care and intention, hosting open houses, conducting online surveys, and facilitating smaller community conversations to learn more about the local vision for this space. Community members could read project materials in six different languages: English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, Chuukese and Vietnamese.
Key community findings included balancing safety features; providing spaces and amenities that offer protection from the elements year-round; programming and facilities that address community needs; spaces that meet the evolving needs of youth; accessible play areas for all; and a park design that reflects community.
The team used this feedback to develop three potential park design concepts. With more community feedback, the final design includes elements from each concept—including a wide promenade, fitness area, picnic and recreational spaces, dog park, an event space, a community garden and sports courts. And in the middle of the park, a lush, restored wetland twith comfortable spaces to learn about and experience nature.
The new destination park will be a safe and welcoming communal backyard where everyone is invited to relax, play, explore and have fun.
The Master Plan will be built in phases, with construction to begin in early 2026.
